Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred is the first workout DVD I started doing back in 2012 when I began my weight loss journey. And let me tell you, it was $10 well spent! While I can’t say it’s my very favorite workout system, it is the one that I would most recommend to people just starting their fitness journey.

Now let me be clear here, I do not recommend this workout to beginners because it’s easy, it is far from easy. Levels 2 and 3 remain challenging for me even to this day. I recommend this workout for beginners because it has some really highly motivational aspects to it. The number one way to start enjoying exercise (if you don’t already) is to see and feel some progress! It’s so motivating when you start to see yourself succeeding, and that makes a huge difference for most people in whether or not they stick to their weight loss or health and fitness goals.
Why I Have Found This to be the Best Workout for Beginners
Because this DVD is designed for you to do the same workout for 10 days in a row, you will be able to see and feel progress very quickly! By day 6 or 7 the workout will feel significantly easier and let’s be honest, that’s a good feeling. You will feel so proud of yourself that you stuck it out through for those first few days where you thought you were going to die.
One thing that I found fascinating in my personal trainer coursework is that the number one indicator for success on any health or weight loss plan is that the client has been successful at a health or weight loss plan in the past. If you can stick with the workout for a week and already feel stronger and healthier (hence the workout feeling easier), you will feel more confident in your ability to continue, and that confidence and motivation is likely to make you more successful at continuing your journey even when it gets tough.
There are several other reasons why I think this is the perfect DVD for beginners, or anyone just starting out on their weight loss journey. For starters, the workouts are short. It’s hard to convince yourself that you can’t spare just 20 minutes of your day. Additionally, it’s cheap to get started. Last time I checked the dvd was less than $10 on amazon, and all you need is a pair of 5 IB dumbbells and a yoga mat to start.
The other thing I love about the way the 30 Day Shred is set up, is by the time you have finished the first several workouts, you are motivated to finish the 30 days, and by the time you finish the 30 days you have essentially built yourself a habit of daily exercise! Additionally you’ll have built a great foundation of full body strength that you can use to move onto any workout you would like. My personal recommendation would be JNL Fusion, you can read my thoughts on JNL Fusion here.
Well there it is, my completely unbiased review of Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred.
