When you are in the middle of a long run or a tough workout, and you feel like you’re going to die… Or at least give up and quit, there are several things you can do to help keep your head in the game! Here are five of my best tips for keeping yourself going when you are tired and just want to stop.
Put on Your Favorite Song
There is nothing that keeps me going better than a song with high energy and good rhythm (think Gangnam Style or Pitbull’s Give Me Everything). If it makes you want to shake it, play it! On more than one occasion I have paused my workout DVD to grab my phone and put on a good workout song. The mood boost it provides always keeps me going so I can finish my workout strong. Read more
When I was in high school I was known for being friendly, cheerful, and optimistic (not sure what happened to that girl!). In fact, it’s one of the things that attracted my now husband to me initially (Yes we met in high school). I can’t say I’m still that overly optimistic person, I find it gets harder as you get older and see more of the bad that happens in the world. However, I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. That’s why I’m going to lead off this countdown with some very wise words from Theodore Roosevelt. Read more
Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred is the first workout DVD I started doing back in 2012 when I began my weight loss journey. And let me tell you, it was $10 well spent! While I can’t say it’s my very favorite workout system, it is the one that I would most recommend to people just starting their fitness journey. Read more
Trainer Lindsey’s 6 week fit body challenge is the program I’m following right now, and it’s working really well for me! It may just be that it’s the right fit for where I am and what I need right now, but I am honestly loving it. Essentially, I’m eating a macro balanced diet that is ideal for fitness and weight loss, and Lindsey has done all the work for me to balance it out and give me delicious meal plans to follow. I purchased JNL Fusion relatively soon after I finished the 30 Day Shred (read my review of the 30 Day Shred here). That was back in 2012, and I still LOVE this set. Like really love it. These DVDs are still my favorite workouts, almost five years later. Jennifer Nicole Lee did a great job with these. The workouts are fun (as far as workouts go) and challenging. She uses some unique moves that I haven’t seen in other workout videos, and the set does a good job of covering all muscle groups. Keep in mind that I purchased this set myself, I was not sent it free for review, so these are my honest thoughts and opinions on the workouts (as a certified personal trainer, and as a mom who is always struggling to stay fit myself). Ketosis is one of the most controversial diet plans. There are a few versions of ketosis diets out there. The one that I personally have tried is Atkins. The idea is, you eat very little carbohydrates, which forces your body to burn fat rather than it’s normal energy source of choice, carbs. Typically on ketogenic diets, particularly in the beginning, the only carbs you are eating are vegetables, and even those are limited. Read more
Considering how much I love Trainer Lindsey’s 6 Week Fit Body Challenge, it’s surprising (even to myself) that I don’t love the free 15 day challenge quite as much. There are some great qualities to it, essentially the same qualities that I love about the 6 week challenge. It keeps you full and you lose weight pretty quickly. You are eating a macro balanced diet with more protein and less carbs. Read more
Ok I’m going to be really honest here, and kind of contradict myself. I personally did not lose any of my weight from mindful eating (also called intuitive eating). At this time in my life I just couldn’t do it. BUT it is an approach that I feel really strongly about.
I came across the book How to Have Your Cake and Your Skinny Jeans Too and I read it in a day and a half. It was so eye opening and fascinating for me. The author divulges all of the research that shows the effects of long term dieting on our minds, and it was mind blowing. I immediately sent the link to my mom and told her she had buy it and read it. Read more
I started my weight loss journey by counting calories. It worked really well for me (that is until I got sick of it, but more on that later). I lost 30 pounds over the course of several months by counting calories and doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. I still wanted to lose another 30 pounds, but I was getting so sick of counting calories. That’s when I started trying out different diet plans and lifestyles. You can read my unbiased thoughts on ALL of the programs I have tried here.
But enough about that, we’re talking about counting calories here. Counting calories can be a good way to lose weight. Tools like the My Fitness Pal app make it so easy to track your calories. It tells you exactly how much you should be eating, including how many extra calories you should eat when you work out. Read more
The 21 Day Fix is a full meal plan and workout system from Beach Body. I do not sell Beach Body, but I have enjoyed all of the workout programs I’ve tried from them. The 21 Day Fix came with a full nutrition and diet framework to follow, in addition to the workouts.
Here are my thoughts on the 21 Day Fix, after having completed it. The workouts are great. They are tough, but fun, and they definitely cover all the major muscle groups. The nutrition/diet guidelines are easy to follow and somewhat flexible. Read more
